Aberdeen left-back Jack MacKenzie is on a mission to secure his place in the Scotland national team after a recent call-up that left him eager for more. The 24-year-old defender was included in the squad for the first time last month, stepping in for Celtic’s Greg Taylor during the UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Portugal.
Although he did not make his debut, the experience has fueled his ambition to return to the squad.
MacKenzie acknowledges the intense competition for the left-back position within the national team, describing it as “crazy.” With established players like Andy Robertson and others vying for the same spot, he understands the challenges ahead. “Once everyone is back fit, the level of player in that left-back position is crazy,” he stated.
This realization has only strengthened his resolve to improve his game and close the gap between himself and the top players in his position.
Training alongside renowned players such as Liverpool’s Andy Robertson has been an invaluable experience for MacKenzie. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from top-tier talent, stating, “You are around top players all the time, so you just take little nuggets that they do.” This exposure to high-level competition has provided him with insights into the standards he needs to meet to earn his first cap.
MacKenzie has been a key player for Aberdeen, contributing to the team’s impressive start to the season, which includes an undefeated streak in the Premiership. With 10 wins and one draw, the Dons are making waves under manager Thelin. MacKenzie’s consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, as he is one of only two players to have started all 18 games this season. His dedication and hard work on the pitch reflect his commitment to both his club and his aspirations for the national team.
As MacKenzie’s contract nears its end, he is aware of the importance of addressing his future. He has expressed a desire to focus solely on his football for now, but he knows that discussions regarding a new contract will need to take place soon. With the winter transfer window opening on January 1, he will be free to negotiate with other clubs if necessary. However, both he and manager Thelin are keen to secure a long-term deal that reflects his contributions to the team.
MacKenzie’s determination is also fueled by the success of his teammates, particularly Nicky Devlin, who recently earned his first cap for Scotland. “I was absolutely over the moon for Nicky when he came on,” MacKenzie shared. Devlin’s achievement serves as motivation for MacKenzie, who is eager to follow in his footsteps and make his own mark on the national team.
