Major sinkhole incident declared in Surrey: Residents evacuated and warned
A major incident has been declared in Surrey following the emergence of a second sinkhole in a busy high street, raising concerns for public safety. The incident, which occurred in Godstone, has led to the evacuation of several buildings and left numerous homes without water supply.

The sinkhole, measuring approximately 19 meters (62 feet) in length and 3 meters (10 feet) in width, has prompted urgent action from local authorities.

Emergency response and public safety measures

In response to the ongoing situation, Surrey County Council has declared a major incident, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts among emergency services, utility companies, and local councils.

Carl Bussey, the assistant director for safer communities at Surrey County Council, stated, “We are working together with emergency services and utility companies, as well as our highways colleagues and Tandridge District Council, to protect the public and property in the area.”

Residents in the vicinity of the sinkhole, particularly those within a cordoned-off area of around 30 properties, are receiving support from Tandridge District Council, which is providing advice on accommodation and safety measures. Authorities have urged the public to stay clear of the area while investigations and repairs are underway.

Utility disruptions and water supply restoration

The sinkhole has caused significant disruptions to water supply in the region, with many residents left without access to clean water. SES Water confirmed that efforts were made to restore supplies to affected households. A statement released on social media thanked customers for their patience during the multi-agency response to the crisis.

“Our bottled water station at our Godstone Treatment Works site will now close,” the statement read. To compensate for the inconvenience, customers who qualify under the Guaranteed Standards Service (GSS) scheme will receive automatic payments to their water accounts. Residents have been reassured that despite potential discoloration or changes in taste and odor, there are no health risks associated with the water supply.

Ongoing investigations and community support

The Local Resilience Forum is actively monitoring the situation, ensuring that all necessary measures are taken to resolve the incident swiftly and safely. Investigations are ongoing to assess the structural integrity of the area and to implement repairs to utilities affected by the sinkhole.

As the situation develops, local authorities are committed to keeping the public informed and updated. Residents are encouraged to report any issues and to stay tuned for further announcements regarding the restoration of services and safety protocols in the area.
