The UK braces for severe snowstorms and freezing temperatures this week, impacting travel and daily life.

Severe weather warnings issued

The United Kingdom is preparing for a challenging week ahead as forecasts predict the arrival of significant snowstorms and plummeting temperatures. According to weather maps from WXCharts, most of Scotland, along with parts of north-east and north-west England, is expected to be blanketed in snow.

While cities like Manchester and Leeds may escape the snowfall, the entire country should brace for sub-zero temperatures by the weekend.

Temperature drops and snowfall predictions

As the week progresses, the Scottish Highlands could see temperatures dip as low as -5°C on March 1.

Other regions, including the south-east, are also likely to experience temperatures falling below zero. The Met Office has indicated that light snowfall is expected on February 26, primarily in the Scottish Highlands, although this may not match the heavier predictions from WXCharts.

In the early hours of February 27, a light dusting of snow is anticipated, but significant wintry conditions are not expected in other areas. Instead, the forecast suggests scattered showers across the UK, with heavy rain moving east overnight and lingering in East Anglia and southeast England by dawn.

Weekly weather outlook

The five-day weather forecast from February 23 to February 27 indicates a mix of sunshine and showers across the UK. Monday will see rain clearing from the southeast, leading to a day filled with sunshine and scattered showers. Temperatures are expected to remain close to average in the north, while the southern regions will enjoy milder conditions.

As the week continues, Tuesday will bring a combination of sunny spells and showers, while Wednesday is forecasted to be wetter, with rain potentially becoming heavy at times. By Thursday, conditions are expected to improve, becoming drier and brighter, although the far north and southwest may still experience some rain.

Future snow predictions and weather warnings

Looking ahead, snow is set to return in early March, with forecasts indicating that northern Scotland will see snowfall beginning around midday on March 7. This snow is expected to move southward, impacting more than half of England and much of Wales by March 8. Major cities, including Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, and Liverpool, should prepare for potential snowfall.

Weather models predict that Yorkshire could see up to 7cm of snow within just one hour on the morning of March 9. Additionally, the Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for rain, which will last for 15 hours, affecting several areas in Wales, including Cardiff, Newport, and Swansea. Rainfall accumulations of 50mm to 70mm are expected over high ground, with the most exposed hills potentially receiving 80mm to 100mm.
