In a significant move for the renewable energy sector, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced its acquisition of the Morecambe offshore wind project, a 480MW fixed bottom wind farm located off the west coast of England. This acquisition, executed on behalf of its fund Copenhagen Infrastructure V (CI V), underscores CIP’s commitment to expanding its portfolio in the offshore wind energy market.

Details of the acquisition

The transaction, which is subject to customary approvals and conditions, involves the full ownership transfer of the Morecambe project from the COBRA Group and Flotation Energy, the latter being a subsidiary of TEPCO Renewable Power, Inc.

While the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, the strategic importance of this acquisition is clear. Flotation Energy will continue to play a role in the project as a development partner, ensuring a smooth transition and ongoing collaboration.

Project significance and location

Located approximately 30 kilometers from the Lancashire coast in the Eastern Irish Sea, the Morecambe project is poised to contribute significantly to the UK’s renewable energy targets. The project was secured during the UK Offshore Wind Leasing Round, highlighting its potential within the growing offshore wind sector. With consent applications already submitted, the project is on track to advance through the necessary regulatory processes.

The future of offshore wind energy

The acquisition of Morecambe by CIP is part of a broader trend towards increasing investment in offshore wind energy, which is seen as a crucial component in the fight against climate change. As countries around the world seek to reduce their carbon footprints, offshore wind farms like Morecambe are becoming essential in providing sustainable energy solutions. The UK, in particular, has set ambitious targets for offshore wind capacity, aiming to generate 40GW by 2030.

This acquisition not only enhances CIP’s position in the renewable energy market but also reflects the growing confidence in offshore wind as a viable and necessary energy source. With the backing of experienced partners and a strategic location, the Morecambe project is set to play a pivotal role in the transition to a greener energy landscape.
