Weather overview for March

This March, the United Kingdom is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures, accompanied by snowfall across various regions. According to recent weather maps from WXCharts, utilizing data from Metdesk, the forecast indicates that 14 counties will be particularly affected by this icy spell.

The initial forecast for March 9 predicts that areas near Oxfordshire will see substantial snowfall, with other parts of the country also experiencing wintry weather.

Regions most affected by snowfall

As the cold front moves in, central and northern regions of the UK are expected to bear the brunt of the harsh conditions.

Cities such as Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen, and Newcastle are predicted to face the most intense snowfall. However, even urban centers like Manchester, Birmingham, and Belfast will not be spared, as they too will receive a light dusting of snow. With temperatures plummeting to as low as -3°C in some areas, residents are advised to prepare for challenging weather conditions.

Weather patterns and predictions

The Met Office’s long-range forecast highlights a split in weather conditions across the UK in early March. Northwestern regions will likely experience rain and stronger winds as Atlantic weather systems make their way from the west. While these wet spells may drift southeast, they are expected to weaken as they progress. Initially, high pressure will dominate the southern parts of the UK, leading to drier conditions. However, as the month progresses, unsettled weather patterns are anticipated to become more prevalent, bringing rain to all areas, including the south.

Mid-March expectations and beyond

As we approach the middle of March, the weather is expected to become increasingly changeable, with spells of rain and strong winds affecting most regions, particularly in the north and west. Rainfall amounts are likely to exceed average levels during this period. Nevertheless, drier interludes are still expected, especially in the southern and eastern parts of the UK. Overall, temperatures may remain slightly above average, providing brief respite from the cold. Towards the end of the month, there are indications that high pressure could reassert itself, leading to extended periods of dry and bright weather across the country.
