The investigation carried out by the Equality and Human Rights Commission declared Labour at fault for harassment and discrimination against Jews. The former leader of the party, Jeremy Corbyn, refused to accept the findings. While the Commission leaded by Munira Mirza complained for the political interference of his office, Corbyn has defended the work done during his tenure. As a consequence, he has been suspended from the party.
Relentlessy, the former Labour leader commented that the whole problem has been “dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media”.
The current Labour leader, sir Keir Starmer, wasted no time in reacting against his predecessor. “And if – after all the pain, all the grief, and all the evidence in this report, there are still those who think there’s no problem with anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.
That it’s all exaggerated, or a factional attack. Then, frankly, you are part of the problem too. And you shoul be nowhere near the Labour party either”.
A Labour party spokepersons made a statement today, October 29, to announce the estrangement of Jeremy Corbyn. “In light of the comments made today and his failure to retract them subsequently, the Labour Party has suspended Jeremy Corbyn pending investigation. He also had the whip removed from the Parliamentary Labour Party”.
Another attack was launched by Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge. At a Jewish Labour Movement press conference, she said that Corbyn demonstated that “he is in permanent denial about the extent of the problems that emerged during his leadership. Even when the evidence is placed in front of him he fails really to understand the importance and severity of it. He sat at the centre of a party that enabled anti-Semitism to spread from the fringes to the mainstream“.
