Boris Johnson was seen cycling seven miles away from Downing Street around the Olympic Park on Sunday afternoon as further restrictions are discussed.
The Prime Minister was wearing a TfL hat and a face mask when he was seen cycling accompanied by security in Stratford, east London, at around 2pm.
Official Government guidance on exercise is that it should be restricted to once a day and that “you should not travel outside your local area”.
The park was busy with families exercising and the PM was apparently concerned by what he saw in the area. Shortly after his cycle ride, Boris Johnson held a meeting with cabinet ministers to discuss the current lockdown.
An insider said that while the PM was exercising “he did note how busy the park was and he commented on it at the meeting last night. He was concerned about if people were following the rules and was concerned after his cycle ride around the park.”
There is a lot of speculation that lockdown measures are set to become stricter with tightened face mask rules and limits on exercise.
Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer, issued a warning today that the NHS is now at the “most dangerous time” in its history and pleaded with people to obey the rules or risk spreading infections.
The vaccinations minister also said that people should not sit on park benches to chat with their friends as fears of rule-bending increase. During an appearance on Times Radio, Nadhim Zahawi said of the matter: “Don’t go out and sit or have that opportunity of social interaction, because you’re helping the virus and that’s what we want to avoid.”
