Baking soda is a great ally at home, not only because it helps to reduce excessive sweating, but also because it is a natural and ecological detergent which is perfect for cleaning, sanitizing, perfuming and more. In fact, you can use it in many different ways around your home, thanks to its anti-bacterial properties.
So let’s discover together some tips to use it in the right way.
Cleaning and Sanitizing Floors and Washable Surfaces
Baking soda is perfect for cleaning floors, especially marble and granite floors. Fill a bucket with 3 litres of water, 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate, 10 tablespoons of alcohol and a piece of Marseille soap or dish detergent.
Your floors will be shiny and disinfected in no time. For ceramic floors, add vinegar, an excellent antibacterial detergent. However, this substance is also suitable for cleaning other washable surfaces such as furniture and kitchen. To eliminate incrustations, make a dough with 3 parts of bicarbonate and 1 part of water. Then rub it directly on the stain you need to remove. Finally, if you dilute it in a litre of water, you can also get a spray for daily cleaning.
Cleaning the Oven and Scraping Off Food Residues with Baking Soda
Often the food residues stick to the oven walls. It is best to use an ecological and effective product to remove them. What you need is a natural detergent that you can make with a cup of salt, a cup of baking soda and a cup of water. Use this mixture on the inner surfaces of the oven to peel off food residues. Simply apply it and let it work for at least an hour before rinsing.
Eliminating Odors, Mould and Moisture
One of the properties of baking soda is to absorb bad odors. in fact it can be used not only to absorb the bad smell of sweating, instead of deodorant, but also to combat mould and moisture. For this reason it is perfect to store in all those closed rooms such as shoe cupboards, wardrobes, refrigerator. Put some baking soda in a bowl and leave it open in the rooms you want to perfume. Remember to change it at least once a month. Pour the “old” one into the drains: in this way you will reduce the formation of limescale and bad smells. To eliminate the unpleasant smell of the trash buckets, spread it on the bottom of the bucket. If you use it to perfume your cupboards, add a few drops of essential oil.
Baking Soda for Laundry
Baking soda is not a substitute for hand or machine wash detergent. However, it is a powerful natural germicide and disinfectant. As a result, it can increase the effectiveness of the detergent. Its powdery consistency also helps to remove stains, thanks to its abrasive action. Moreover, always used in small doses, it neutralizes unpleasant odours from laundry. Add a teaspoon of bicarbonate to your laundry detergent or pour it directly into the washing machine basket.
Baking soda works wonders. I recently had an end of tenancy clean and the team actually had a bag of baking soda with them and used it over more chemical cleaning stuff, which is obviously great!
