A spectacular meteor show will be available to any star-gazer tonight and tomorrow night. One of the ‘best meteor shower of the year’ according to NASA.
The Perseids are considered the most spectacular and probably the most popular meteor show of the year. Star-gazers will be able to enjoy the Perseids 2020 show particularly on August 11 and 12.
The warm summer weather, in fact, allows skywatchers to view the amazing spectacle considered by NASA, one of the ‘best of the year’. Viewers will be able to see about 20-times more shooting starts than normal. The ‘shooting stars’ in question are the Perseids, known for their fireballs and wakes of light, so they are famed for putting on a memorable show.
During the Perseids’ peak, star-gazers will probably see about 90 meteors per hour under clear, dark skies.
The Perseids’ peak will be on the morning of August 12, but they will be visible on August 11 and 13 as well.
According to NASA, the Perseids “are considered the best meteor shower of the year” as they “frequently leave long ‘wakes’ of light and colour behind them as they streak through Earth’s atmosphere”.
“Perseids are also known for their fireballs. Fireballs are larger explosions of light and colour that can persist longer than an average meteor streak.”
The best time to take a look seems to be “during the pre-dawn hours”. No particular equipment is needed, the advice is to look up and ‘to the north’ and the darkest possible location is preferable.
