Maradona hospitalized in Argentina
The football icon Diego Maradona has undergone successful brain surgery to treat a subdural haematoma. This is what his personal doctor says.
The footbal idol was admitted to the Ipensa clinic in Buenos Aires on Monday, suffering from anaemia and dehydration.
Then, he was transferred to the Olivos Clinic in La Plata, where he underwent a brain operation by Dr Luque, his neurosurgeon.
The procedure took about 80 minutes and it was to address a brain subdural haematoma, often caused by a head injury, which can put pressure on the brain.
“I was able to evacuate the haematoma successfully and Diego tolerated the surgery very well,” Leopoldo Luque told reporters outside the clinic. And he continued: “The steps now are observation, but it is controlled. It will depend on how he does.”
The doctor also added that Maradona agreed with the procedure.
Moreover, he explained that although it was a routine operation, the surgery involved numerous risks due to Maradona’s precarious health conditions.
About 50 fans, who had gone in front of the clinic to make Diego feel their closeness, celebrated when reports of the successful outcome started to emerge, chanting: “Diego, Diego!”.
At the same time, the supporters of Gimnasia y Esgrima, the local club that he coaches, have been congregating outside the hospital, waving flags and holding posters with messages of support as they waited for news.
Also his former club Napoli made him feel his closeness, tweeting a message of support.
Maradona, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, made his last appearance in public on his 60th birthday last Friday before his side’s league match against Patronato.
