Interrail Destinations in Europe: Our top 5 recommendations.

In recent years, the number of people between 18 and 40 that have decided to go interrailing has increased more and more. The Interrail pass is a train ticket that allows european citizens to travel on any train in Europe within an established period of time. The idea was born from the desire to be able to quickly leave everything behind and jump from country to country, to a number of different destinations.

Interrail in Europe: Our favourite destinations

There are myriad places to visit that will amaze you so we’d like to simplify your search and present our 5 most scenic and beautiful locations in Europe to see by train.

The Flam Railway, Norway

Firstly, we’d like to focus on the rail journey across southern Norway from Bergen to Oslo. The Flam Railway (Flåmsbana) offers a panoramic view of some of Northern Europe’s most stunning and magnificent nature.

As part of this trip, we’d recommend the Norway in a Nutshell experience with a cruise on the UNESCO protected fjords.

West Highland Line, Scotland

Our second pick is the West Highland Line in Scotland – this Interrail experience takes place on three of Scotland’s most celebrated railways. You will be taken on a journey from Inverness (one of Michael Palin’s “Great Railway Journeys”) to Kyle of Lochalsh, including a nostalgic trip on the steam-hauled Strathspey Railway. We promise incredible Scottish landscapes and a truly unforgettable experience of the Highland countryside.

Rome to Palermo, Italy

We would now like to move to Italy, particularly the journey from Rome to Palermo. The travel here is not direct due to interruptions such as the Strai of Messina and so lasts about 12 hours. The journey, however, is worth it. Along the way you can see the rugged and intense landscapes of Mount Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples as well as the countryside of Calabria before arriving in your final destination, Sicily.

Algeciras to Ronda, Spain

Moving a bit further west, the incredible landscape around Andalucia, Spain presents an incredible journey through beautiful green forests, serene white villages and stunning viaducts and tunnels. The route takes you from the port of Algeciras, on the mediterranean, up to Ronda, a beautiful but unforgiving old Moorish town, sat precariously, high above a ravine. This journey is not one to be missed.

Train des Pignes, France

Last but not least, we’d like you to consider Southern France and the Train des Pignes (Pine Cone Train). This remarkable journey takes you for over 150 kilometres, from Nice to Digne-les-Bains, the capital of the Alpes-de-haute Provence department of France. Here you travel through a number of medieval towns and villages before your arrival in Digne on the edge of the Alpine foothills.
