India records the highest daily death toll from Covid-19 in the world

This is the highest in the world, surpassing the US which had recorded 5,444 deaths on 12 February.

After a local state revised the numbers to take into account people succumbing to the disease at home or in private hospitals. The Nitish Kumar government announced that the Bihar Health Department in eastern India revised the total deaths related to the virus on Wednesday to more than 9,400 from about 5,400.

This is the highest in the world, surpassing the US which had recorded 5,444 deaths on 12 February. India’s total caseload of the virus is now 29.2 million after rising by 94,052 in the last 24 hours.

Delhi the capital and Mumbai have begun to reopen, but others including Kerala Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Rajasthan have extended their blockades until mid or late this week, according to Reuters.

Hospitality sectors are also rewinding their lor or doors, but in stages to avoid a spike in infections. The Delhi Metro began working on Monday at half capacity, while the city’s shops are also opening every other day to limit the slump.

So far India has administered more than 230 million doses of a vaccine, but less than four per cent of its 1.4 billion people have been fully vaccinated.
